The Brewery Arts Centre, Kendal
23 January to 3 March 2015
This is a major exhibition with work from more than 40 Green Door members on the theme of “Awakening”. Work includes paintings, prints, drawings, sculptures, ceramics and glass.
“This acrylic painting is concerned with ‘awareness’ of change. We live in a frantic time with technological changes, new ways to communicate and create and the layers of colour and texture reflect the issues which we are constantly addressing ( or trying to). It seems we need to re- invent our lives on a daily basis.”
“As I walked around Kendal early in the morning I could feel the town gradually stirring and there seemed to be definite stages of awakening. I have tried to capture two of these moments as they happened around Gooseholme, looking in different directions. I was surprised to find what a different face Kendal took on in these moments at dawn.”
“My inspiration was Kate Chopin’s wonderful novel ‘The Awakening’ which depicts the struggles of a woman aspiring to fly above the restrictions of nineteenth century society. I incorporated key quotations and images from the novel, of water and birds with broken wings, into my work.”
“My work is inspired by how change, chance, fate and beliefs can shape our identities and our futures, so ‘Awakening’ is a very apt theme for my figurative ink paintings. In them I explore the drama of a revelation and the excitement and refreshment to be found in something new.”
“My submission called To the Other Side is an attempt to express moving from one state of consciousness to another. It is about ‘moving into the light’ which can be viewed as a metaphor for dying but with a belief that there is something else that we go towards. This painting is also influenced by our dramatic Cumbrian landscape and how the light of the sky so often contrasts strongly with the dark more solid textures and colours of the fells.”
