Kendal painter, Rachel Greenbank, always dreamed of one day becoming an artist, and graduated from the University of Central Lancashire with a 1st Class BA degree in illustration in 1998. A year later she visited the New Designers show in Islington where she met an agent, and gained her first art job designing greeting cards for Inspire by Design in Nottingham. This led to her work being published worldwide by companies such as Woolworths, Clintons, International Greetings and Gibsons. After 5 years of freelance design she returned to her first love, portrait and figure painting. She is presently represented by Rapture Gallery in Harrogate, and is a member of Green Door Studios and Kendal Arts Community. She is currently based in her studio at Barn Farm just outside Kendal.
Rachel’s latest exhibition, ‘Muses” is a collection of strikingly detailed, modern, colourful portraits. Some of the subjects are unknown, some models, and others famous musicians and film stars such as Debbie Harry from Blondie. Using Photoshop she blends the subjects face with flowers, textures, landscapes or abstract patterns before working on the final painting”. Rachel says, “The technical aspects of the creative process are meticulously planned. However, capturing emotion and the subjects personality is far more spontaneous and from the heart. I love painting faces. The moment when you can almost feel the subject’s soul staring back at you is as powerful as a lightening strike.”
She creates bold, tonal paintings full of life and soul that are reflections of love, personality, culture and spirituality. Rachel is inspired by ancient mythology, indigenous culture, lyrics, music and Renaissance art.
