Catherine MacDiarmid is celebrating her appearance in this year’s Sky Portrait Artist of the Year with this exhibition of her portraits, including the self-portrait which stood out to the TV show’s judges from more than 1,500 entries submitted to the competition.
“The Artist’s Eye” presents a selection of Catherine’s portraits from the past twelve years and celebrates her commitment to portraiture. As well as “Self”, which was painted at a difficult time in the artist’s personal life when tiredness and low self esteem were eminent, the exhibition includes a recent portrait of her mother and “Mugshot”, a portrait that was in the BP Show 2002, and is also in “500 Portraits”, a recent publication by the National Portrait Gallery.
Catherine says “These works focus on the portrayal of family and friends as opposed to commissioned portraits; this allows for a more honest study of people in close proximity, where flattery and outward beauty are sometimes sacrificed for self reflection and meticulous detail. I am, myself, part of the same figurative environment I paint, and what these portraits convey is open to many interpretations.”
