My name is Alain Marcus; I write, paint and draw. I was born in Buenos Aires in 1978 and have been living these past 6 years in France (and elsewhere). I have recently arrived in Kendal where I am focusing on my poetry and portraiture. I have mostly worked within the boundaries of figurative art because representation is what interests me. Only when abstract art has representational connotations it becomes appealing to me.
I am focusing on portraiture for the following reason: through the years I have been interested in narrative painting and genre painting—from Rembrandt to Brueghel, from Odd Nerdrum to Vincent Desiderio—, but the composition of such paintings requires time and space that I do not have. Portraiture, on the other hand, has for me a condensation of all the technical and aesthetic challenges regarding representation. So in painting or drawing people’s faces I feel I am getting the best out of what I consider to be the gist of art.
