I work in red earthenware clay, predominantly wheel thrown but sometimes formed on press or hump moulds. I am interested in functional pots that demonstrate the plastic nature of the raw material and show the hand of the maker.
I make a full range of usable and decorative pots influenced by the forms of the medieval potter and the later country potteries which continued in that tradition up into the 19th century.
Drawing on the varied traditions of English and Continental slipware, the pots are simply decorated in a variety of techniques using a limited palette of coloured slips and then once fired in a gas fueled kiln to 1080°C.
My aim is to maintain the spontaneity of the making in the finished pot.
