I have always been interested in working with wood including making furniture and items for the home. I was a teacher of Craft and Design in a local Comprehensive school until I retired and could then focus my creative attention on making clocks. I am particularly interested in the work of Charles Rennie Macintosh and the Arts and Craft movements and latterly in Art Nouveau and Art Deco styles.
One of my large lattice clocks in the Macintosh style was commissioned by a church in Scotland and I have clocks in Europe and as far away as Australia.
Many of the motifs I used on my earlier clocks were based on Charles Rennie Mackintosh’s designs, but my later ones have included some Arts and Crafts design motifs and the clocks based on those have been really popular.
I was recently asked if I could design boxes by some of my friends so I started making “tipper” boxes, which is a box without hinges. The lids of many of these are inspired by landscapes around where I live.
I have always loved the idea of working with exotic woods so when I got a small lathe off a friend recently, I bought some small pieces of exotic woods and started make pens and artist’s pencils which I really enjoy turning and they have sparked a lot of interest too.
